How to choose a heat pump or air conditioning installer
The certificates that matter, the questions to ask and the red flags to avoid when you get quotes.
Certificates that matter
- MCS: needed for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and for solar export payments.
- F-Gas company certificate: a legal requirement for anyone working with refrigerant.
- A consumer code such as RECC or HIES: protects your deposit and gives you a dispute service.
- TrustMark: the government-endorsed quality scheme.
- Public liability insurance.
Questions to ask
- Will you do a room-by-room heat loss calculation?
- Which flow temperature is the system designed for, and what SCOP should I expect?
- Is the grant already deducted on this quote?
- Who registers the manufacturer warranty, and what servicing does it require?
- What happens if something goes wrong in the first year?
Red flags
- A price over the phone without a survey.
- Pressure to sign on the day.
- A large deposit with no protection.
- Vague answers about the grant or certificates.
How HeatCool Hub helps
We check certificates before an installer gets a badge, show the work they have finished near you, and keep your equipment details, warranty dates and service reminders in one place after the job.
