How a heat pump moves heat

Air conditioning and heat pumps work the same way. They do not burn anything: they carry heat from one side to the other, so one unit of electricity moves three to five units of heat. Switch between summer and winter to see the refrigerant change direction.

The refrigerant cycle Refrigerant circulates between the indoor and outdoor units. The compressor makes it hot, the expansion valve makes it cold, and heat is moved from one side to the other. Inside your home 22 °C Outside 31 °C 1 Compressor 3 Expansion valve 4 Indoor coil 2 Outdoor coil

    Questions

    What homeowners ask us

    More in our guides.

    Popular guides

How much is the heat pump grant?

In England and Wales the Boiler Upgrade Scheme takes £7,500 off an air or ground source heat pump (£9,000 if it replaces oil heating) and, since 28 April 2026, £2,500 off air-to-air air conditioning that heats your home. Your MCS-certified installer applies and takes it off your quote. In Scotland, Home Energy Scotland has its own grants and loans.

Can air conditioning heat my home in winter?

Yes. Modern air conditioning is an air-to-air heat pump: in winter it heats rooms, typically giving three to four units of heat for every unit of electricity. It does not heat hot water, so most homes keep a boiler, a cylinder or a hot water heat pump for that.

    Do I need planning permission?

Most houses in England can fit an air source heat pump or air conditioning outdoor unit under permitted development, within limits on size, noise and position. Flats, listed buildings and conservation areas often need permission. Your installer checks this at the survey.

Is HeatCool Hub really free for homeowners?

Yes. Installers pay a monthly listing fee. We do not take commission from your job, so the price you get is the installer's own price.

    What does “verified” mean?

An installer uploads a copy of each certificate, and our team checks the number, the company name and the expiry date before the badge appears. You can also check any registration yourself with the link on their profile.

    What happens to my details?

Your home plan is stored encrypted. Installers only see it when you send them a request, and you can download or delete your data in My home at any time.
