Heat pump and air conditioning grants
What you can get, who qualifies and why the installer you choose decides whether you get it.
| System | Grant | Conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Air-to-air heat pump (air conditioning that heats) | £2,500 | Replaces gas, oil, LPG or electric heating. Since 28 April 2026. |
| Air source heat pump | £7,500 | Replaces gas, LPG or electric heating. |
| Air or ground source heat pump replacing oil | £9,000 | Higher rate for homes switching from oil. |
| Ground source heat pump | £7,500 | Replaces gas, LPG or electric heating. |
Why the installer matters
The grant is paid through an MCS-certified installer. If an installer is not MCS-certified for the system they are fitting, you cannot get the grant. On HeatCool Hub, the line “Can claim the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant” only appears after we have checked the installer’s MCS certificate.

Questions
Who applies for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?
Your MCS-certified installer applies for you and takes the grant off your quote. You cannot apply yourself.
Can I get the grant for air conditioning?
Yes, since 28 April 2026 an air-to-air heat pump can get £2,500 in England and Wales if it replaces gas, oil, LPG or electric heating. Cooling-only installs do not qualify.
Do I need an EPC?
Yes. The property needs a valid Energy Performance Certificate. Your installer will check it.
Does Scotland have the same grant?
No. In Scotland, Home Energy Scotland offers a separate grant and interest-free loan.
Is there a grant for solar panels?
There is no upfront national grant, but installation is currently zero-rated for VAT until 31 March 2027 and an MCS installation lets you earn through the Smart Export Guarantee.
